UMMC One of Only Two "Top Hospitals" for Safety and Quality, Six Years in a Row For a sixth year in a row, the Leapfrog Group has named UMMC as one of the nation’s best hospitals for patient safety and quality of care. UMMC is one of only two hospitals nationwide to have met Leapfrog's criteria each year since 2006. The Leapfrog Group's national survey measures hospital performance in a range of areas including patient care outcomes, use of best practices and patient safety initiatives and measures of efficiency. |

UMMC Wins National Environmental Excellence Award from Practice Greenhealth Practice Greenhealth, an organization of dedicated to environmentally responsible practices at large health care facilities, awarded UMMC a "Partner for Change, with Distinction, Award." UMMC staff accepted the award in April at the annual global conference, CleanMed2011, in Phoenix, Arizona. The Medical Center has previously won the "Partner for Change Award." This year, the award comes "with distinction" - a higher level that recognizes a greater level of action and results. |

The American Heart Association has recognized UMMC with the Start! Fit-Friendly Company Gold Level Award for the third straight year for its efforts to promote the health of its employees. The award recognizes UMMC's creating a culture of physical activity in the workplace and promoting a wellness culture by providing support to employees and implementing physical, nutritional and cultural changes. |

UMMC Named a Top Hospital of the Decade for Patient Safety and Quality by the Leapfrog Group UMMC is one of only two U.S. hospitals named a Top Hospital of the Decade for patient safety and quality of care by the Leapfrog Group. The award recognizes the medical center's inclusion on the Leapfrog Top Hospital list every year since its inception in 2006. The Leapfrog Group's national survey is the only national, public comparison of hospitals on key issues including preventing medication errors and infections and standards for performing high-risk procedures. |

This award goes to intensive care nursing units that have met rigid criteria for excellence, exhibit high-quality standards and provide exceptional care to patients and their families. |

Joslin Diabetes Center, UniversityCare Providers Receive NCQA Diabetes Recognition The primary care providers of UniversityCare and the specialists at the Joslin Diabetes Center have received the National Committee on Quality Assurance (NCQA) Diabetes Recognition, joining an elite group of physicians across the country who share this honor. The NCQA awards its Diabetes Recognition to top clinicians who have demonstrated a high level of performance in delivering care to patients with diabetes. |

UMMC Wins Two Awards for Environmental Excellence from Practice Greenhealth UMMC was presented with two awards from Practice Greenhealth, a national membership organization for health care facilities committed to environmentally responsible operations. The "Partner for Change Award" was presented to the Medical Center in honor of its efforts to reduce waste, eliminate mercury and prevent pollution in a health care environment. The "Making Medicine Mercury-Free Award" was also presented to the Medical Center to recognize its mercury-free management, purchasing policies and recycling programs. |

BMT Nurses Named Best Nursing Team: Receive First Place Award from ADVANCE for Nurses Magazine The Blood and Marrow Transplant team the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center has won first place for Best Nursing Team from ADVANCE for Nurses magazine. The award evaluates nursing teams for initiative, adaptability, expertise and outreach, and is given in conjunction with National Nurses Week, which is observed May 6-12. UMGCC's team is featured on the cover of the magazine's May issue. |

UMMC's Progressive Care Unit Wins Beacon Award from AACN UMMC's Progressive Care Unit has received the prestigious Beacon Award from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). The award recognizes the top intensive care units in the country. The PCU is the first progressive care unit in Maryland to receive this award. To receive the award, intensive care units must meet rigorous criteria for excellence, exhibiting high-quality standards and exceptional care for patients and their families while fostering and sustaining healthy work environments. The units are evaluated on 42 criteria in six categories: patient outcomes; evidence-based practice and research; leadership and organizational ethics; excellence and innovation in recruitment and retention; education, training and mentoring; and promoting healing environments. |

UMMC's Respiratory Care Earns National Recognition UMMC has earned Quality Respiratory Care Recognition (QRCR) for the fourth year in a row. The recognition is part of a national program aimed at helping patients and families make informed decisions about the quality of the respiratory care services available in hospitals throughout the nation. Only 15 percent of hospitals in the United States have been awarded this designation that ensures they provide a level of respiratory care consistent with national standards and guidelines. |

UMMC's Perioperative Services Team has been selected by the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) to receive the first annual Outstanding Facility Achievement Award in Perioperative Nursing for 2010. UMMC is the first institution in the world to receive this award, which was created to recognize one institution each year for outstanding collegial achievement in exemplifying the mission of AORN. |

UMMC Breast Center Achieves Center of Excellence Designation The University of Maryland Breast Center has been designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The designation is awarded to breast-imaging centers that achieve excellence by seeking and earning accreditation in all of the ACR's voluntary breast-imaging accreditation programs and modules, in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program. |

UMMC Receives Medal of Honor for Success in Organ Donation The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded UMMC a Medal of Honor for Organ Donation. The award recognizes UMMC for sustaining a level of 75 percent for organ donation, meaning that, of all patients who met the criteria for donating organs, next-of-kin agreed in 75 percent of those cases to authorize donation. |

UMMC Receives Magnet Designation in Recognition of Nursing Excellence The University of Maryland Medical Center has achieved Magnet Designation in recognition of the hospital's nursing excellence. Magnet status is awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to hospitals that meet specific criteria for nursing professionalism, teamwork and the highest standards in patient care. Only about 5 percent of hospitals across the United States have this prestigious designation. |

UMMC Named One of Nation's Top Hospitals by Consumers' Checkbook, AARP Magazine UMMC is listed among the nation's top 125 hospitals, according to a Consumers' Checkbook survey for the May/June 2009 issue of AARP Magazine. Consumers' Checkbook, a non-profit research organization, rated hospitals in the nation's 53 largest metropolitan areas to develop its list. Consumers' Checkbook uses government statistics, surveys of doctors and other forms of research to compare and rank hospitals for the quality of care they provide. Criteria for the survey include doctor recommendations, patient recommendations, whether proper tests and procedures are carried out, complications in major cases, and death rates for high-risk cases. |

UMMC Named a "Top Hospital to Work For" by Nursing Professionals Magazine UMMC was one of 100 hospitals selected as a "Top Hospital to Work For" based on a job satisfaction survey of 25,000 nurses from around the country by Nursing Professionals Magazine. Winning hospitals were recognized for giving nurses a voice in how things are done, being family-friendly employers who offer flexible work schedules and for having a diverse nursing workforce.

UMMC Again Recognized Nationally as a Top Hospital for Cardiovascular Care For the second year in a row, UMMC is one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals for cardiovascular care, according to a study by Thomson Reuters, which provides healthcare research for businesses and professionals. |

UMMC is the only Maryland hospital to receive Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care recognition in four areas: bariatric surgery, cardiac care, complex and rare cancers and transplants. The designation is based on rigorous, clinically meaningful measures established in collaboration with expert physicians’ and medical organizations’ recommendations. The goal is to help consumers find healthcare facilities that have demonstrated better overall outcomes in the delivery of specialty care. |

University of Maryland Hospital for Children Earns Certificate of Distinction in Pediatric Asthma The University of Maryland Hospital for Children is the first pediatric hospital on the East Coast to receive a certificate of distinction from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) for its treatment of children with asthma. The designation shows that the Hospital for Children’s pediatric asthma program meets rigorous standards for excellent care. |

More than 3,000 entries were submitted to this year's competition. |

UMMC Web Sites Win Five eHealthcare Leadership Awards The Web sites for the University of Maryland Medical Center, Heart Center and Greenebaum Cancer Center won a combined five eHealthcare Leadership Awards. This prestigious awards competition, sponsored by eHealthcare Strategy & Trends, recognized these web sites with awards for best web 2.0 site, best health/healthcare content, and best eHealth organizational commitment. UMGCC won a gold award for best health/healthcare content in the Hospital Center of Excellence Division -- the top award given in this category. |
